What is ASTM F1667?
ASTM F1667 is the American Society for Testing and Materials standard specification for driven fasteners — the primary standard governing wire nails and coil nails used in US construction. Published and maintained by ASTM International, F1667 defines the dimensional requirements, material properties and coating specifications for coil nails used in residential and commercial construction throughout the United States.
ASTM F1667 Shank Types
- Smooth shank (Type I) — general purpose, easy driving, standard withdrawal resistance
- Ring shank (Type II) — superior withdrawal resistance, required for wind uplift zones
- Screw shank (Type III) — maximum withdrawal resistance for dense wood
Coatings Per ASTM F1667
- Bright (uncoated) — interior applications only
- Hot-dip galvanized (HDG) — ASTM A153 Class D — required for pressure-treated lumber (ACQ, CA, MCQ) per IBC and IRC codes
- Stainless steel 304/316 — for coastal areas and corrosive environments
