Nails for Pressure Treated Wood USA — AWPA & ICC Compliance Complete Guide
February 10, 2026
By Kishan Agola
Why Nail Selection is Critical for Pressure-Treated Lumber
Using the wrong fastener with pressure-treated lumber is not just a code violation — it is a structural safety issue. The chemical preservatives used in treated lumber (ACQ, CA, MCQ, MCA) are significantly more corrosive than the older CCA treatment. Standard galvanized nails can fail within just a few years.
What the IBC and IRC Say
- ACQ/CA treated lumber: requires hot-dip galvanized per ASTM A153 Class D, or stainless steel 304/316
- Electroplated galvanized nails (EG) are NOT acceptable for pressure-treated lumber contact
AWPA Standard for Fasteners
The AWPA Standard U1 requires a minimum coating of Hot-dip galvanized per ASTM A153 Class D (minimum 1.85 oz/sq ft zinc coating) for fasteners in treated wood. PAVANDEAL manufactures HDG coil nails specifically for these corrosive US applications.
